Emily with doula'd baby Nina

** Please note: as I have recently become a parent myself, I will not be offering doula services for 2017 **

Doulas are trained and experienced professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. Research has shown that when doulas attend births, labours are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

I became a doula because I felt motivated to help facilitate smooth and positive birthing experiences for people with the least amount of intervention possible. I make a sincere effort to attend to each individual couples needs and concerns before, during, and after birth and to help couples recognize and build the inner strength to carry through birth and labour. I work hard to listen and be present throughout all of my encounters with you so that you can feel comfortable and confident in working with me. Birth may be natural but each one feels like a truly miraculous event.

A birth doula's tasks include assisting the mother & partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for birth, staying with the mother throughout their labour, providing emotional/physical support, an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the parents get the info they need to make informed decisions. Doulas also facilitate communication between the labouring mother, partner and clinical care providers, and are trained to help in births with both midwives and OB/GYNs in a home/birthing centre/hospital setting. As a naturopathic doctor & doula, I'm able to provide prenatal care including help with nutrition, supplementation recommendations, and various techniques for easing the challenges of labour. Working with a naturopathic doula gives you the added benefit of working with a medical professional educated in the physiology of birth and equipped with tools to aid in common challenges of birth and labour, including baby position, stalled labour, avoiding induction, and pain management.

I completed doula training for naturopathic doctors in 2012. In 2014, I had the privilege of completing the introductory workshop for mentors with Virginia Bobro of Birthing From Within, which has significantly informed my approach to working with couples. I have experience with both home and hospital births, and am happy to assist in either. My work as a naturopathic doula is covered by most extended healthcare benefit packages under naturopathy. Please contact your insurance provider to see what's in your plan.
